The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP, says it fully supports the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government and representatives of the Ogoni people aimed at resolving the over three-decade crisis surrounding oil exploration in Ogoniland.
MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, stated this while addressing a large gathering of MOSOP supporters in Giokoo, Gokana Kingdom.
Nsuke expressed optimism about the dialogue, saying the focus of the discussions is now shifting towards addressing the demands and development concerns of the Ogoni people, rather than concentrating solely on the resumption of oil production.
He said MOSOP is therefore committed to supporting the dialogue process, describing dialogue as the best option in pursuing a non-violent struggle.
The MOSOP President also acknowledged what he described as the Federal Government’s recognition of past wrongs in its treatment of the Ogoni people, saying the ongoing discussions provide an opportunity to address longstanding grievances.
Nsuke said the ultimate goal of MOSOP is to see the emergence of an Ogoni economy that protects the future and welfare of the people.
He maintained that the Ogoni struggle was fundamentally a protest against underdevelopment, stressing that the benefits of the struggle must reach the people for whom the sacrifices were made.
The MOSOP President urged the Ogoni people to remain peaceful, focused and committed to the dialogue process.
He also warned against actions or individuals capable of undermining the ongoing discussions, insisting that the sacrifices made during the Ogoni struggle must not be allowed to become meaningless.
