Reps Committee Faults Use of Gas Flaring Penalties Meant for Oil-Impacted Communities

A committee of the House of Representatives investigating the revenues and expenditures of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, has faulted the utilisation of funds meant for oil-impacted communities.

A member of the committee and representative of Degema-Bonny Federal Constituency, Cyril Hart, questioned why penalties paid by international oil companies for gas flaring are not being adequately deployed to communities affected by the environmental impact.

Hart described the alleged neglect of the affected communities as insensitive and genocidal.

He also challenged the NMDPRA to present the committee with a structured plan detailing how penalties paid by multinational oil companies for gas flaring are being utilised.
