The President of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), Alejandro Dominguez, has called for the expansion of the 2030 FIFA World Cup to 64 teams to mark the tournament’s 100th anniversary.
Dominguez said the proposed one-off expansion would celebrate the centenary edition of the global football tournament, which is scheduled to be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
FIFA has yet to respond officially to the proposal, which would further expand the tournament after the 2026 edition featured 48 teams for the first time.
