Residents and farmers of Bukuma Agum Community in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State have appealed to government authorities for urgent assistance following severe flash flooding in the area.
Displaced residents and farmers, who recounted the impact of the flooding, said surging floodwaters have forced families from their homes, submerged farmlands, destroyed seedlings and contaminated sources of drinking water.
The victims also raised concerns over the influx of dangerous reptiles into residential areas, while economic activities in the community have reportedly been brought to a halt.
They appealed to the Rivers State Flood Committee to urgently provide relief materials to affected residents.
Also speaking, the President of Bukuma Youth Organization, Goodnews John, called on the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, the Chairman of Degema Local Government Area and relevant state disaster management agencies to conduct an immediate assessment of the situation.
John said the assessment would help determine the needs of affected families and facilitate appropriate assistance.
Farmlands, major roads, residential buildings and schools in Bukuma Agum Community have been submerged by floodwaters.
