Enyimba are on the verge of equalling an unwanted club record when they host Sporting Lagos in Wednesday’s Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, fixture at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
The nine-time NPFL champions have endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 season, losing their opening three league matches against Niger Tornadoes, Doma United and newly promoted Inter Lagos. The results leave Enyimba as the only team yet to earn a point this season.
A defeat or draw against Sporting Lagos would mean Enyimba have failed to win their first four league matches of a season, a feat last recorded by the club in 1999.
The 1999 campaign remains one of the poorest starts in Enyimba’s history, before the Aba side went on to establish itself as one of Nigeria’s dominant clubs, winning its first league title in 2001 and consecutive CAF Champions League titles in 2003 and 2004.
The latest setback came on Sunday when Enyimba suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Inter Lagos, with Ezekiel Moses scoring the only goal of the match. The result also handed Inter Lagos their first-ever victory in the Nigerian top flight.
Enyimba chairman Nwankwo Kanu has since appealed to supporters to continue backing the team as the club seeks to turn its fortunes around.
The People’s Elephant will now look to the Sporting Lagos encounter for their first victory of the campaign and an opportunity to avoid matching the unwanted record from 27 years ago.
