The Rivers State Government says it is working tirelessly to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM) and all forms of violence against women.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Justina Jumbo, made this known at the close of a two-day awareness workshop organised in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). She described FGM as a harmful traditional practice that must be stopped.
A survivor, Veronica Odum, shared her experience, revealing she is still battling both physical and emotional trauma. She urged parents and communities to shield female children from such harmful practices.
During the event, the Uwema of Otari in Abua Odual Local Government, Ipalibo Oguge, called on traditional rulers to take the lead in ending the practice.
