A Port Harcourt-based security expert, Victor Umoren, has advocated stricter policies and regulations by universities as part of measures to curb recurring insecurity linked to cult groups on campuses.
Umoren made the call in an interview with Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiowhor, while reacting to recent security concerns in universities, particularly incidents reported at Rivers State University and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education during examinations.
The security consultant suggested that universities should consider admitting only students aged between 22 and 25 years and above, as well as introduce measures requiring newly admitted students to provide sureties before resuming academic activities.
He also called for greater parental involvement, urging parents to instill strong moral values in their children to guide their decisions and choices.
Umoren expressed concern over the alleged involvement of some teachers and lecturers in cult-related activities, saying the situation reflects failures in addressing the problem from the primary to tertiary levels of education.
He urged university managements to establish and enforce firm policies capable of discouraging students from engaging in cultism and other activities that could threaten security on campuses.
The security expert further called for a return to strong moral upbringing, stressing that moral values should be restored as a guide for children in making responsible decisions and choices.
