Federal, Rivers Governments Recognise Ambrose Sopuruchukwu-Okpor as NYCN Chairman

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Rivers State Ministry of Youth Development have officially recognised Ambrose Sopuruchukwu-Okpor as the authentic Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Rivers State Chapter, ending months of leadership disputes within the organisation.

The recognition followed a verification exercise initiated by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development in a letter dated April 2, 2026, requesting all states to confirm the identities, contact details, and tenure of duly elected NYCN state chairmen for the records of the Interim Management Committee overseeing the council’s affairs.

In its response dated April 29, 2026, the Rivers State Ministry of Youth Development confirmed that Ambrose Sopuruchukwu-Okpor emerged as Chairman through an election conducted in April 2025 by the national leadership of the council led by Sokubo Sara-Igbe Sokubo.

The ministry stated that officials of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies monitored the election.

It further confirmed that Okpor’s tenure runs from April 16, 2025, to April 16, 2028, and directed that he be accorded full recognition and official protocol as Chairman of the NYCN in Rivers State.

Reacting to the development, the Rivers State Chapter of the NYCN described the recognition as a “new dawn” for the organisation, saying the official position of both the Federal and State Ministries had put to rest all uncertainty surrounding the council’s leadership in the state.
