COURT INVALIDATES INEC TIMELINE FOR 2027 ELECTION PRIMARIESThe Federal High Court in Abuja has struck down the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political party primaries and candidate nominations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Delivering judgment, Justice Mohammed Umar held that the timelines imposed by INEC were inconsistent with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2026. The court also nullified the Commission’s requirement for political parties to submit membership registers and databases within a fixed deadline.
The ruling followed a suit filed by the Youth Party, which argued that INEC’s directives exceeded its constitutional powers and violated statutory provisions governing pre-election processes.
