Three years after the killing of the Divisional Police Officer of the Ahoada Police Division in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, SP Bako Angbashim, the Odemude Youth Congress has vowed to sustain the peace and security currently enjoyed in the community.
Angbashim was killed by suspected cultists led by the late 2Baba in Odemude on September 8, 2023, an incident that heightened insecurity and disrupted social and economic activities in the community.
Following the killing, 2Baba and some of his lieutenants were killed in several joint security operations led by the then Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olutunji Disu, who is now the Inspector-General of Police.
Four of the individuals arrested in connection with the killing, including a native doctor, were sentenced to death by hanging by the Rivers State High Court, presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku.
Speaking on the incident and the subsequent restoration of peace, President of the Odemude Youth Congress, Dandison Ishieka, expressed regret over the negative image the incident brought to the community.
Ishieka said the killing had a devastating impact on Odemude, forcing many residents to flee while bringing economic activities to a standstill.
He, however, commended the Rivers State Government, traditional rulers, the local government council, the police and other security agencies, as well as youths of the community, for their efforts in restoring peace and security.
The youth leader urged young people in Odemude and the wider kingdom to protect the prevailing peace, warning against drug abuse and other activities capable of undermining the security of the community.
Ishieka also appealed to governments at all levels, individuals and well-meaning Nigerians to support the community with basic infrastructure and economic empowerment.
