La Liga President Javier Tebas has called for stricter financial controls, greater transparency and uniform economic rules across European football following reports concerning Manchester City’s long-running Premier League financial case.
Tebas said recent developments in the case had again demonstrated the importance of applying the same financial rules to all clubs in order to protect the integrity and sustainability of football.
The La Liga chief recalled that he had raised concerns about what he described as “financial doping” in European football as far back as 2017, citing clubs with access to substantial external financial resources.
Recent reports indicate that an independent Premier League commission found Manchester City responsible for 114 of 115 alleged financial breaches. However, the case is not yet concluded, with the club maintaining its position that it is innocent and the sanction still to be determined.
Tebas said financial sustainability should not be viewed as bureaucracy, arguing that clubs should compete under common rules and primarily on the basis of the resources they generate and how effectively they are managed.
He maintained that greater economic oversight and transparency are necessary to ensure fairness and protect the long-term sustainability of the sport.
