SECURITY: RIVERS TEACHERS DEMAND DEPLOYMENT OF ARMED PERSONNEL TO SCHOOLS

Primary and secondary school teachers in Rivers State have called for the deployment of security personnel to all public schools across the state, citing rising insecurity and fears over attacks and kidnappings.

The teachers, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, said they are worried about the safety of pupils and staff, especially in rural areas where security challenges are more severe.

Speaking through the Senior State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Rivers State, Bassey Asuquo, the teachers said recent abductions in other parts of the country have heightened anxiety in schools.

A cross section of teachers said they no longer feel safe in their duty posts, urging government urgent intervention.

Receiving their protest letter at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, assured that government is working with security agencies to protect schools and that no such attack will be allowed in the state.
