The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has called on the State Ministry of Local Government Affairs to intervene in cases where some local government chairmen are allegedly withholding the salaries and allowances of council workers.
The appeal was made by the newly elected State President of NULGE, Evangelist Anthony Lenyie, during a courtesy visit to the ministry in Port Harcourt.
Lenyie commended the ministry for its supervisory role over local government councils and urged it to intensify training and capacity-building programmes for workers across the state’s local government areas.
He said prompt intervention in issues affecting workers’ welfare would strengthen the local government system and improve service delivery at the grassroots.
Responding, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Victoria Samuel, assured the union of the ministry’s continued collaboration with NULGE to enhance local government administration and promote effective grassroots development across Rivers State.
