Rivers LG Chairmen Face Public Scrutiny After 10 Months in Office

Ten months after their inauguration, the current Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State are facing growing public criticism over their performance in office.

The chairmen were sworn in on September 1, 2025, by the then Sole Administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, following the local government transition.

Speaking on their performance, Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Chetam Nwala, described the administration of most of the chairmen as disappointing, alleging that they have failed to meet the expectations of people at the grassroots.

Also commenting, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State, Mfata Mfata, accused the council chairmen of prioritising personal interests over public service. He alleged that many of them are more concerned with enriching themselves and their families than delivering development projects to their communities.

Similarly, the Convener of the Ogoni Development Drive, Solomon Lenu, said he did not expect meaningful results from the current council leadership because of what he described as the controversial circumstances surrounding their emergence. He alleged that the chairmen are primarily interested in sharing their monthly allocations rather than addressing the needs of residents.

The criticisms come as residents and stakeholders continue to call for greater accountability, transparency and improved service delivery at the local government level across Rivers State.
