A consultant radiologist, Dr. Nengi Alazigha, has advised women from the age of twenty to cultivate the habit of regular breast self-examination to help detect early signs of breast cancer.
Dr. Alazigha, who is the Chairman of the Association of Radiologists in Rivers State and an Associate Professor of Radiology, gave the advice during a two-day free pre-conference breast cancer screening for women of childbearing age held in Ogu and Bori.
She explained that most breast cancer complications arise because many women delay seeking medical help due to fear. Dr. Alazigha also outlined simple steps women can use to examine their breasts at home, highlighted symptoms that should never be ignored, and identified some underlying risk factors for breast cancer.
Some beneficiaries of the free breast cancer screening expressed gratitude to Dr. George Kelly and Boma Iyaye for sponsoring the initiative in partnership with the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria, Rivers State chapter.
The screening exercise recorded over 350 women participants, with 49 cases found to have suspicious cancerous masses, while 89 had non-cancerous lumps.
