NYSC Clarifies Circumstances Surrounding Death of Corps Member in Rivers

The Rivers State chapter of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has responded to public reactions surrounding the death of a 25-year-old corps member, Dr. Wisdom Enakirerhi, who was serving at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt.

The death of the young medical doctor has sparked widespread concern, following claims by a close relative that he experienced delays in obtaining approval to travel for medical treatment, with some alleging the delay contributed to his death.

Reacting to the allegations, the Rivers State NYSC Coordinator, Moses Oleghe, said the scheme was addressing claims circulating on social media regarding the circumstances of the corps member’s passing.

Oleghe explained that Dr. Enakirerhi applied for permission to travel on June 18, 2026, and that the forwarding letter reached the NYSC office on June 24. He added that the corps member also contacted the zonal inspector directly on the same day and was immediately granted verbal approval to proceed because of the medical nature of his request.

According to the NYSC coordinator, the six-day delay between the application and the receipt of the forwarding letter occurred at the Military Hospital, which has yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Oleghe also dismissed reports that the corps member died in Port Harcourt, clarifying that Dr. Enakirerhi had successfully travelled to Calabar before his health deteriorated and he eventually passed away.
