A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Walter Akani, has urged the Nigeria Police Force to remain neutral and avoid political involvement during the ongoing electioneering period.
Akani, who spoke to Today FM’s Preye Izogu, expressed concern over alleged destruction of NDC billboards in Oyigbo and the arrest of some African Democratic Congress, ADC, members in Ikwerre Local Government Area.
He said such developments could create a sense of marginalisation among opposition groups and warned against any political group assuming a monopoly of violence.
The NDC chieftain stressed that neutrality by the police and other security agencies is essential to building confidence among opposition parties and ensuring a credible electoral process.
Akani called on the police to discharge their duties professionally and ensure equal treatment of all political parties and their supporters.
He also urged security agencies in the state to protect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation.
