Gunfire, Explosions Rock Eastern DR Congo as M23 Rebels Advance

Sporadic gunfire and explosions have been reported in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as M23 rebels advance toward a key city, escalating an offensive that has forced thousands of civilians to flee across the border into neighbouring Burundi.

Residents reported widespread panic as shops and schools were shut down, with many people remaining indoors amid fears that the rebels had seized control of some government buildings. The deteriorating security situation has heightened concerns over civilian safety and further displacement in the conflict-affected region.

The renewed fighting comes barely a week after United States President Donald Trump brokered a peace deal between DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, aimed at ending the long-running conflict in eastern Congo. Despite the agreement, hostilities have continued, raising questions about the durability of the truce.

Humanitarian agencies are warning of a growing refugee crisis as more families cross into Burundi to escape the violence, while regional and international actors continue to call for restraint and a return to dialogue.
