Gates Foundation Reduces Microsoft Stake to 11%

By Paul Chimodo

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has reduced its investment in Microsoft to 11% of its total portfolio. This is a major cut from previous years when Microsoft made up more than a quarter of the foundation’s holdings.

The foundation’s investment arm, the Gates Foundation Trust, gradually sold off shares over the last two years, including significant reductions in 2025. Microsoft now ranks below other major investments like Berkshire Hathaway and Waste Management in the trust’s $35.4 billion portfolio.

The move is part of a diversification strategy to reduce concentration risk and ensure the foundation can continue funding its global health, education, and poverty reduction programs. Despite the smaller stake in Microsoft, the foundation continues to increase its spending on charitable initiatives worldwide.
