Some reports claim that Boko Haram insurgents ambushed Nigerian troops along the way to the border town of Damasak, near Niger Republic, where they intended to set up a permanent base.There are also claims about the militants inflicting heavy casualties on the government forces, but the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel SANI USMAN could only confirm that two officers and twenty-two soldiers were wounded in action.
According to a brief statement published on the online-based PR-Nigeria, Colonel USMAN said the troops managed to repel the attack by the insurgents.
The Army spokesman said Boko Haram terrorists had attempted an incursion into the 113 Battalion situated at Kareto, in northern Borno State.
He said it took the timely response of the troops, with the support of aerial forces, to hold down and push back the invading militants.
Colonel SANI USMAN said there has been more reinforcement of troops and the area was now cool and calm.
