Cardiologist Warns Against Excessive Alcohol Consumption, Backs Regulation

An Associate Professor of Medicine and Consultant Cardiologist at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Boma Oyan, has warned that excessive alcohol consumption poses serious health risks, affecting the heart, liver, brain and other vital organs.

Speaking in an interview with Today FM Correspondent, Odinakachi Celestine, Dr. Oyan expressed support for efforts to ban unregulated sachet alcoholic drinks, stating that poor regulation makes it difficult to monitor their production and sale.

She stressed that alcoholic beverages should not be sold to persons under the age of 18, noting that restricting access to minors is essential for protecting public health.

The cardiologist also cautioned against mixing alcohol with native herbal medicines. While acknowledging the role of traditional medicine, she said the ingredients used in herbal remedies must be properly identified and scientifically verified to ensure they are safe for consumption.
