Telcos Spent Over $1bn on New Network Towers — NCC

By Paul Chimodo

Telecommunications operators in Nigeria spent more than $1 billion on new network towers and related infrastructure in 2025, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The NCC disclosed this in its latest industry performance data, noting that the investment was part of efforts by operators to expand network coverage, improve service quality, and meet rising data demand across the country. Thousands of new base stations were deployed nationwide, with increased focus on underserved and rural areas.

The commission said the level of investment followed recent tariff adjustments, which were approved to enable operators fund network expansion and infrastructure upgrades. It added that the new deployments contributed to improvements in network capacity and performance in several parts of the country.

However, the NCC acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly with 5G coverage, which is still limited in some major cities. The regulator said it is working with operators to address the gaps and ensure wider access to high-speed connectivity.

The NCC further revealed that telecom operators have indicated plans to sustain and possibly increase infrastructure investment in 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and improve overall quality of service.
