Tension has gripped Rumuodogo Two Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State following an attack by suspected gunmen that reportedly left more than six people dead.
The Youth President of Rumuodogo One and Two, Progress Ohiege, alleged that the attackers, believed to be from neighbouring Oboma Community in Degema Local Government Area, also injured at least seven persons and set more than 18 houses ablaze during the midnight invasion.
Ohiege said the attack followed allegations that some indigenes of Oboma were killed in a river by persons from Rumuodogo Two. He, however, stated that leaders of Rumuodogo had earlier visited Oboma to seek peaceful dialogue while awaiting the outcome of investigations into the allegations.
He warned that the community expects those responsible for the attack to explain their actions, cautioning that failure to do so could trigger further violence. Ohiege added that the incident had yet to be formally reported to the police or other security agencies, while the bodies of the victims reportedly remained in the community as residents fled for safety.
