Senate passes new bill to strengthen fight against kidnapping and the Anti-Jungle Justice Bill in Nigeria

The Bill to outlaw abduction, wrongful restraint and confinement for ransom was sponsored by Senator ‎ISSAH MISSAU.
It aims to prevent and punishing the act of kidnapping in any form and to strengthen security agencies to deal with perpetrators of such crime.
The passage of the bill followed clause-by-clause consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
The presentation was made by the Chairman of the committee, Senator CHUKWUKA UTAZI.
Our correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the Senate also passed a bill for the prohibition and protection of persons from lynching, mob action and extra judicial executions.
The Anti-Jungle Justice Bill, which was sponsored by Senator DINO MELAYE, seeks to discourage the use of jungle justice in criminal matters and criminalises any act of lynching of a person, irrespective of offence committed.

The Senate has adopted a motion to congratulate Nigerians on the 57th independence anniversary of the country.
Moving the motion in plenary today, the Deputy Senate President, IKE EKWEREMADU congratulated Nigerians on the 57th independence anniversary.
Senator EKWEREMADU said the celebration on 1st October this year provides an opportunity for Nigerians to advocate peace and unity of the country.
Standing under a point of order, the PDP Senator from Enugu State called on all Nigerians to eschew bitterness and explore the benefits that come with the country’s diversity.
The Senate Minority Leader, GODSWILL AKPABIO stressed the need for justice and fairness to all Nigerians, irrespective of any consideration.
Senator AKPABIO said there was need to look into the issue of restructuring and work towards reorganizing ‎the system for the benefit of all.
On his part, Senator BIODUN OLUJIMI called for introspection, adding that there was the need for a convergence of thoughts on how to make the welfare of Nigerians the utmost priority.
Also speaking, Senator SAM ANYANWU called for sober reflection based on what he called serious spiritual problem that had befallen Nigeria.
