The Senate has been at loggerheads with the Customs Boss over the planned clampdown on vehicles without import duty papers and has now summoned retired Colonel HAMEED ALI for the second time in a matter of days.
But the Comptroller General of Customs has said the Senate has not followed the right procedure in extending its invitation, adding that he was yet to receive any correspondence to that effect.
Speaking during a media interview monitored in Port Harcourt, HAMEED ALI said he was ready to appear before the Senate if the right procedures were followed.
But even if the Senate decides to formerly summon the Customs Boss in writing, there might still be a problem about HAMEED ALI’s insistence not to wear the uniform of the Nigerian Customs Service, as demanded by the Senate.
Furthermore; the Comptroller General of Customs explained that the new policy on the enforcement of customs duty payment on imported vehicles was being implemented after consultations with vehicle dealers.
You will recall that the Customs Authorities on Wednesday issued a statement affirming that the enforcement of the import duty paper would go ahead on the expiration of a one-month period of grace, despite a resolution of the Senate calling for suspension of action on the plan.
Following the development; the Senate in plenary yesterday presided by its Deputy President, Senator IKE EKWEREMADU, passed another resolution summoning the Comptroller General to appear before the whole Senate in his official uniform.
