Sen Uchendu Calls for Declaration for State of Emergency in Education

Senator UCHENDU made the call while contributing to debate on a motion moved by Senator ADAMU ALIERO from Kebbi Central.
Senator ALIERO drew attention to the declining standard of education in Nigeria, stressing the need to go back to the drawing board to restore education to its former glory.
Senator ALIERO listed poor funding, neglect by government, distasteful style of teaching, poor infrastructure, lack of teaching tools and research facilities as some of the reasons for the setback.
In its resolution; the Senate urged the executive arm of the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the education sector.
The lawmakers also advocated improvement in the standard of the teaching profession by improving the status of teachers through building their capacity to deliver better quality education.
They also urged the federal and state governments to be more involved in early childhood education, just as they called on the Nigerian Teachers Registration Council to evolve a more vibrant methodology for delivering their mandate.
