The Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board, UBEB, has criticised parents and guardians who send their children to hawk during school hours, stressing that every child should be in the classroom.
The Chairman of the Board, Sam Ogeh, stated this during the commissioning of the reconstructed and fully furnished Township School Two on Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.
Ogeh said the state’s free education policy was designed to ensure that children have access to basic education, urging parents and guardians to take active responsibility for their children’s future rather than relying entirely on government.
He also commended the Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area for prioritising investments in educational infrastructure.
Earlier, the council chairman, Allwell Ihunda, condemned the persistent looting and vandalism of public assets across the local government area.
Ihunda announced the immediate deployment of security guards to public schools across the LGA to protect the facilities and deter criminal activities.
Also speaking, the Leader of the Rainbow Coalition in Port Harcourt City Local Government, Ken Chikere, commended the council chairman for his investments in basic education, describing the initiative as a significant legacy for the people of Port Harcourt.
The Head Teacher of State School Two, Ogali Dayi, said the reconstruction and furnishing of the school had brought an end to the ordeal of pupils sitting on bare floors to receive lessons.
