A Port Harcourt-based legal practitioner, Asim Adams, in an interview with Today FM’s Ifunanya Obeme-Ndukwe, said his most dangerous experience at night is driving in Port Harcourt without street lights.
Adams, who said he no longer drives at night, appealed to the Rivers State Government to power the street lights at the appropriate time, to reduce crime in the city.
On his part, the Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Okpaka Dokubo, said the lack of effective streetlights at night kills the nightlife of the city, due to the insecurity it attracts.
Dokubo said when the streetlights are not on at the appropriate time, it makes it easier for vandals to steal the bulbs and the poles.
Parts of Ikwerre Road, Airport Road, and the East-West Road have remained in the dark, despite appeals by road users and residents of Port Harcourt to the Rivers State Government since last year.
