This followed the signing into law of the Rivers State Education – Return of Schools Amendment Bill by Governor NYESOM WIKE.
Performing the ceremony at the Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor WIKE noted that the bill would help in the sustenance of the quality of education in mission schools.
A statement released by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, SIMEON NWAKAUDU, noted that Governor WIKE also signed four other bills passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly into law.
The new legislations are the Rivers State Honours Law, Rivers State Reserve Fund Repeal) Law, Rivers State University Law and Rivers State University Teaching Hospital Law.
The statement quoted Governor WIKE saying the Rivers State Reserve Fund Repeal Law became necessary due to alleged financial recklessness of the immediate past administration in the state.
Governor WIKE noted that the past government under the APC did not respect the initial Reserve Fund Law, as it indiscriminately withdrew funds that were meant for the future.
WIKE claimed that the past government withdrew fifty-three billion naira from the Reserve Fund between February, 2014 and May, 2015, without going through due process.
On the Rivers State University Law; Governor WIKE said the amendment was to avoid the loss of accreditation of several courses offered by the University following a new regulation by the National Universities Commission.
The bills signing ceremony was witnessed by several dignitaries and members of the State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, IKUNYI IBANI.
