Rivers State Government Launches Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week to Enhance Healthcare Services

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the State Commissioner for Health, Doctor Adaeze Oreh, highlighted the significant progress made over the past year in the health sector in the state, including, improvements in access to healthcare services for mothers and children, reduction in maternal and child mortality, increased vaccination coverage, and enhanced support for maternal and child nutrition in the state.

However, Doctor Oreh also pointed out ongoing challenges, including disparities in healthcare access, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and prevalent malnutrition, emphasizing the need to address these issues with renewed intention and vigour.

The Health Commissioner announced that the outreach efforts during MNCHW will extend to communities and special populations, including churches, to ensure inclusivity and comprehensive coverage.

Doctor Oreh assured that during this period, there will be free antenatal registration, free delivery services, cervical cancer screenings, and other essential health activities.

She also revealed the introduction of obstetric ultrasound services in primary healthcare centers, aiming for early detection and diagnosis to reduce mortality rates.

Today FM’s Ifunanya Obeme-Ndukwe reports that Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week is a national program held twice a year, with this first round running from July 22 to July 26.
