You may recall that the state governor, Nyesom Wike had in his New Year broadcast announced that demolition of the shanties in parts of the state would continue as part of his administration’s effort in fighting insecurity.
On Saturday, the government made good its threats and conducted the demolition of the shanties and other buildings in the area, at the expiration of the one week ultimatum issued to the residents to vacate the areas.
Lamenting over their losses; some residents said the government would have given them at least three months to find an alternative settlement.
The demolition exercise came few days after the civil society organization in the state appealed to the state government to provide an alternative settlement for residents of the area before the demolition.
