The workers are protesting against proposed cuts in salaries, which were announced last week.

The government in Rio had declared a financial emergency ahead of the Rio Olympics earlier this year.
Governor LUIZ FERNANDO PEZAO said unless the austerity measures were approved by the state assembly, he could not guarantee the full payment of workers’ salaries next year.
