The President stated this when he received the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State, Retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar, yesterday at the State House, Abuja.
He urged all the signatories to the 2023 election peace accord, and their supporters, to abide by its content and spirit.
Earlier before the meeting, Retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar led the peace committee to sign an accord with eighteen presidential candidates of all political parties as well as chairmen of the parties to ensure peaceful campaigns.
At the ceremony in Abuja organized by the National Peace Committee, the candidates agreed to abide by the guidelines as provided for in the electoral law
Retired General Abubakar also appealed to the political parties, their presidential candidates and supporters to ensure issue based campaigns as fake news and misinformation are already creating toxic environment that is capable of threatening the peaceful conduct of the 2023 elections.
In his remark, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah while expressing hope that the 2023 elections will be free, fair and credible, urged politicians not to encourage vote buying.
On their parts, the inspector general of police, Alkali Baba and chairman of the independent national electoral commission, Professor Mahmud Yakubu warned that any breach of peace and the constitution would be met with stiff penalties.
The candidate are also expected to sign a second accord in January next year to accept the outcome of the elections.
