CHRIS NGIGE said the Employment Compensation Act makes it mandatory for employers of labour to take care of the fundamental insurance needs of workers in the event of death, accident and health emergency needs.
The Labour Minister told Governor WIKE that he decided to begin with Rivers State in promoting the scheme because of the strategic importance to the welfare of living and deceased workers.
A statement released by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, SIMEON NWAKAUDU quoted the minister saying that the private sector has already keyed into the insurance scheme for workers.
The Minister also used the opportunity to emphasize the need for politicians to reduce emphasis on political parties when dealing with the issue of development.
He described political parties as vehicles to specific destinations where leaders are empowered to enthrone development.
The Labour and Employment Minister urged Governor WIKE to see himself as the father of Rivers State, just as President MUHAMMADU BUHARI is the father of the nation.
In his response, according to the statement, Governor WIKE agreed with Doctor CHRIS NGIGE that issues of development must always receive priority attention despite political differences.
Governor WIKE told his guest at the Government House in Port Harcourt that placing development above partisanship would enhance the partnership between the Federal and State Governments in a bid to transform the country.
The Governor also praised the Minister of Labour and Employment for standing out in his leadership style, by setting aside politics to liaise with the Rivers State Government on the development of a credible insurance scheme for State Government workers.
