Islamist militant in Mali jailed by ICC for destroying historic shrines in Timbuktu.

AHMAD AL-FAQI AL-MAHDI admitted leading rebel forces who destroyed historic mausoleums at the world heritage site in Mali in 2012.

However; he admitted guilt and told the court he was sorry and felt remorseful, and regret all the damage his actions had caused.

Based on his apology; the ICC Judges handed AL-MAHDI a lenient sentence of nine years imprisonment.
