In Congo-Brazzaville; the result of a referendum seeking to grant a third term of office to President DENIS SASSOU NGUESSO will be announced in the days ahead.
This comes after the electorate voted yesterday to effect constitutional changes that stand in the way of NGUESSO’s third term bid. However, the President said the changes are not meant to benefit him personally, but to provide a constitution of the future.
Reports say the referendum was boycotted by the opposition, and recorded low turnout in the capital Brazzaville. President DENIS SASSOU NGUESSO is over the age of seventy and has already served two terms; which is the limit prescribed by the constitution. The weeks leading to the vote had been characterized by violent protests, which claimed the lives of four people.
