The Chief ICC Prosecutor FATOU BENSOUDA said the objective of the probe is to see if there is evidence of war crimes in the illegal operations.
BENSOUDA told reporters that one of the areas she intends to look into is the fact that hundreds of thousands of migrants that are being trafficked across from Libya, get into Europe.
The development comes after some one thousand, four hundred people were rescued over the last two days while trying to get to Europe by sea.
It is also estimated that about one hundred and seventy thousand migrants have arrived in Italy by sea this year alone.
