Health Expert Warns Against Mixing Energy Drinks With Alcohol

Health experts have raised concerns over the growing habit of mixing energy drinks with alcohol among young people, warning that the practice could lead to serious health complications despite the widespread belief that energy drinks reduce the effects of alcohol.

A Port Harcourt-based pharmacist, Magnus Asonye, said the combination only masks the feeling of intoxication without removing alcohol from the body, increasing the likelihood of excessive alcohol consumption and risky behaviour.

According to him, mixing energy drinks with alcohol can cause dehydration, nausea, vomiting, increased heart rate and high blood pressure, while prolonged use may lead to heart disease, sleep disorders, anxiety, and poor academic or workplace performance.

Asonye advised young people to avoid combining energy drinks with alcohol, stressing that neither drink cancels out the effects of the other and urging healthier lifestyle choices to protect their health.
