The approval of the fifty percent counter fund for the
Rivers State Government/European Union Niger Delta Support Programe was confirmed in a statement released by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Electronic Media, SIMEON NWAKAUDU.
According to the statement, the latest approval is the second tranche of counterpart funding for the water project covering Opobo, Nkoro and Kalaibiama, as well as Abonnema, Kula and Abissa.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Minister Counselor of the European Union to Nigeria, KURT CORNELIS; Governor WIKE noted that the fact that the state government paid the first tranche of fifty percent proved its commitment to the project.
The Governor urged those in charge of implementing the Niger Delta Support Programme component three to be transparent in the award of contracts for the projects.
He said water and sanitation remain key issues because they are close to the health of people residing in the communities.
After this project, Governor WIKE said he expects the EU to give Rivers State more grants to extend water supply to other local government areas.
The statement quoted that the EU official to have urged the Rivers State Government to show commitment by ensuring the payment of the fifty per cent counterpart fund for the water and sanitation projects in two local government areas.
He said contracts for the programme would be signed on 26th October this year.
