Residents of Deken Community in Gokana Local Government Area have appealed to the Rivers State Government for urgent intervention over the deteriorating condition of the bridge linking the community to neighbouring towns.
The residents said the bridge has developed serious structural defects and is at risk of collapse following weeks of heavy rainfall, which triggered severe erosion and left deep cracks in the structure.
A community member, Dumtu Pius, warned that the bridge is no longer safe for heavy-duty vehicles, including fuel tankers and trucks, and urged the Rivers State Government and the Gokana Local Government Council to urgently reconstruct the bridge before it collapses.
