Niger Delta environmental activist Ankio Briggs has blamed the prolonged political crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for the governance challenges facing Rivers State.
Reacting to claims that Governor Fubara is not in charge of the state’s affairs, Briggs said the governor should not be blamed for the pace of development, considering the political tensions that have persisted since October 2023. She argued that Rivers people have become the biggest victims of the crisis.
Briggs accused members of the State House of Assembly of pursuing the interests of their political principal instead of the state’s development, questioning how the governor was expected to effectively govern when lawmakers initially refused to receive the state budget and later passed it reluctantly.
She also accused the FCT Minister of contributing to poor governance in the state, claiming that the level of political opposition faced by Governor Fubara would have prevented anyone from achieving significant progress under similar circumstances.
