Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has explained why Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise turned down the opportunity to represent Nigeria at international level.

Olise, who was born in England and is eligible to play for Nigeria, France, England and Algeria through his heritage, ultimately chose to pursue his international career elsewhere despite Nigeria’s interest.

Rohr revealed that while efforts were made to convince the player during his early development stage, Olise was already leaning towards representing other nations available to him.

The former Nigeria coach noted that competition for dual-nationality players has become increasingly difficult, with top football nations often winning the race for emerging talents.

Olise has since gone on to establish himself at top European level, with his decision closing the door on a potential Super Eagles career.
