FIFA Assessing Action Over Argentina’s Falklands Banner

FIFA is reviewing reports from Wednesday night’s FIFA World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina before deciding whether disciplinary action will be taken over a political banner displayed by Argentina’s players after the match.

Following their comeback victory, Argentina’s players celebrated with a banner bearing the inscription “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Falkland Islands are Argentinian.”

The display has drawn attention due to the long-standing territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands.

Before the match, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni had urged that the fixture should not become overshadowed by the political dispute.
