Gauff Targets Higher Level as US Open Title Bid Continues

American tennis star Coco Gauff says she is capable of raising her level when necessary as she continues her bid for a second US Open title.

The fourth-seeded Gauff began her 2026 campaign with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Turkey’s Zeynep Sonmez at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 22-year-old, who won the US Open in 2023, faced some resistance from the world number 53 but remained composed to secure her place in the second round.

Gauff said she enjoys challenging her opponents to maintain a high level throughout a match, adding that she is confident in her ability to respond when the pressure increases.

“I know that I can raise my level if I need to,” Gauff said.

The American enters the tournament with added confidence after winning the Cincinnati Open and is seeking her third Grand Slam title.

Gauff will face either Daria Kasatkina or Paula Badosa in the second round.
