Femi Falana Warns FCT Minister Against Sealing Embassies Over Ground Rent Disputes

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, advising against the contemplated sealing of 34 embassies and foreign missions in Abuja over unpaid ground rents.

Falana, known for his advocacy of legal rights and adherence to international treaties, argued that such actions would be contrary to established legal precedents. He pointed out that approximately 20 court rulings — including decisions from high courts, appeal courts, and the Supreme Court — have consistently held that the FCT authorities lack the authority to unilaterally seal or seize embassy premises within Abuja.

The senior lawyer emphasized the importance of respecting international diplomatic protocols, citing the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. He stated, “As far as the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations is concerned, the premises of any embassy in Abuja are inviolable by Article 22 of the convention.”

Falana’s warning comes amid reports that the FCT authorities are considering measures to address the alleged ground rent arrears owed by some foreign missions, raising concerns over potential diplomatic conflicts and legal violations.
