The Federal Government has inaugurated the Advertising Offences Tribunal in line with the provisions of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act 2022.
The tribunal is established to address unprofessional practices, misconduct and other offences within the advertising and marketing communications industry.
Speaking on the development, Chairman of the Advertising Practitioners Association, Port Harcourt Chapter, APAPHC, Dike Bekwele, said the tribunal would help curb unwholesome and unprofessional practices in the industry.
Bekwele said the development would strengthen advertising regulations and ensure greater compliance by practitioners and advertisers.
He added that the tribunal would also help tackle misleading and unsubstantiated advertising claims capable of bringing the industry and the country into disrepute.
Bekwele, who is also a lecturer in the Department of Marketing at the University of Port Harcourt, urged political parties and their candidates to comply with regulations governing political advertising.
He warned that displaying unapproved political advertising materials without subjecting them to the required vetting process constitutes a violation of the Advertising Act.
Bekwele further said the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON, would work with relevant security agencies to ensure that offenders are brought to justice.
