Fake US embassy in Ghana shut down after 10 years

Some persons of Ghanaian and Turkish nationalities have already been arrested by the police over the scam.

Investigations show that the bogus US embassy was being operated by fraudsters for the last ten years in the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

The fake embassy was uncovered in a joint operation by the Ghanaian police and the United States embassy in the West African country.

Members of the criminal gang sought clients from Ghana and neighbouring West African countries, and brought them to a building in Accra where the American flag was flown.

The BBC reports that the syndicate was charging a fee of six thousand dollars on unsuspecting US visa applicants.

It also turned out that the visas eventually issued out by the gang were not completely fake.

The findings suggest involvement of insiders at the American Consulate, and ongoing investigations intend to find out the level of penetration.
