Evictees of waterfront communities in Port Harcourt and other parts of Rivers State have staged a protest to the office of the National Human Rights Commission to draw attention to their condition. Our correspondent reports that the protesters included evictees from Eagle Island-Agip waterfront, Njemanze water front, Abonnema waterfront and Ogoni farmlands. The protesters complained about the delay in resolving their dispute with the Rivers State Government which deprived them of their homes. The leader of the group; EDWIN LEYEE told newsmen outside the premises of the National Human Rights Commission that hearing of related cases have been pending in court for months due to the inability the Commission to send representatives.EDWIN lamented that the Commission was treating the evictees poorly instead of helping them to get justice. Our correspondent reports that a director of the National Human Rights Commission was available at the time of the protest declined to respond to the claims by the evictees.
