Oceana international campaign group made the revelation against the backdrop of efforts by several West African countries to put an end to foreign ships fishing illegally in their waters.
Oceana’s senior director BETH LOWELL said Western African coastal states are very vulnerable to illegal fishing, which accounts for an estimated forty percent of all fish that are caught in the region.
LOWELL said fish makes up the majority of daily animal protein intake in the affected countries, and large fishing vessels are taking away the food security of the population.
