A Professor of Sociology of Development at the University of Port Harcourt, Sofiri Peterside described the Niger Delta as occupied region by multinational, contrary to what people call host communities.
Professor Peterside who spoke at the Multi Stakeholders Conference on Oil company Divestment in the Niger Delta said Multi National oil companies must fulfill all their cooperate social responsibilities to their host communities before leaving.
Earlier in his address, Ken Henshaw who is the Director of “We the People”, said the conference is aimed at bringing the Niger Delta people together to chat a way forward and ensure that the Multi Nationals in the region do not embark on divestment or criminal flight after sixty years of oil extraction with negative impacts on the people.
Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiowhor reports that other Environmental Activists, including Celestine Akpobari and Tijah Bolton-Akpan who were present at the conference in Port Harcourt, insisted on legal action against the Multi Nationals to ensure they pay for all the damages done against the people of the Niger Delta region
Representatives from Niger Delta communities, Civil Society Organizations and Environmentalists were present at the conference.
